Blake Shelton is an able and accomplished country singer who has been churning out hits since the early 2000s. His single “Honey Bee” is rising up the charts at this writing. With a playful style and charm to burn, Shelton can be a fun listen but ballads seem to bring out his best. It is a testament to the man’s charisma that his fans blast the slightest criticism of his music as if defending a beloved family member or friend. The passion of the defense is on the level of “Leave Britney alone!”” (sobs).
blake shelton red river blue1 Blake Shelton Red River BlueRed River Blue (Warner Bros. Records) is schmaltzy country music with a bit of risque zing. Pretty much what you would expect. One thing you can say for this album is that it’s true to its genre – this is straight-up down home fare.
The plays on words get overly cutesy on ”Hey” i.e. “Hey/ Let’s take a roll in the (pause) hay.…” ”Let’s Drink On It” sets a sexy mood but the lyrics are like bad porno dialogue before the main event. It does, however have an alluring 1970’s crossover country-rock touch.
“Red River Blue” seems to be the most heartfelt track on the CD. It’s a duet with his country-star wife Miranda Lambert and Shelton here puts his baritone to expressing some genuine-sounding emotion and leaves the double entendres and wisecracks temporarily behind. The cover of “God Gave Me You” follows in the same notable vein.
The line between sweet and sappy is a tough one to walk. Sometimes Shelton manages it, other times he slips over the border.
“Honey Bee” is a prime example of that-relying too heavily upon the awww-they’re-in -love isn’t that adorable factor, That may work for a Youtube cat video but music can only take so much of it before the bucket of sugar leaves no room to add spice.
I’d love to hear Shelton put his fine voice to songs that capture his multi-faceted personality more often as in covering (or writing) songs like Jimmy Buffett’s “If The Phone
Doesn’t Ring, It’s Me” I think he has it in him.
